The Congregation of Benedictine Sisters of Divine Providence was established in Voghera, North of Itasly, in the year 1849. The Sisters Maria Schiapparoli and Giustina Schiapparoli were sensitive to the needs of their time. They saw the misery and poverty that many a young girl lived in and the risks these girls faced became manifold when combined with their situation of ignorance and illiteracy. So they started welcoming in their own house many girls, beggars who were on the roadside and in bad situations of life. As teachers they welcomed assisted and educated the poor and disadvantaged youth, giving love, diginity, education and a hope for a better future for those girls.
The Congregation came to Brazil in the year 1936. After 1981 the Brazilian provinces and Counsel General in Itasly started other missions in Guianea Bissau, Paraguay, Bolivia, Romenia, Albania, Kenya, Mexico and Argentina. In the year 1996 they came to the Asian Continent, India for the first time. In India they have only one community, the novitiate house which belongs to the Brazilian Province, in Curitiba – Parana.
Theirs is a life of trusting in the Divine Providence, in simplicity and humility, follwing the motto of theirm protector Saint BenedicTel Ora et labora |
