St.Antony Mary Claret founded this Congregation of Priests and Brothers on 16th July 1849 at Vic in Spain. At present there are 3,150 Claretians working in 64 countries.
The aim of the Congregation is to glorify God and to sanctify the members by evangelizing the world, especially through the ministry of the Word. This is an active apostolic society of missionaries , the term ‘missionary’ being understood in the sense of trying to express the life and style of the apostles in the following of Christ reflecting the experience of St. Claret.

The Ministry of the Word is exercised taking into account whatever is urgent, opportune and effective. Hence the field of activity is not restricted to one area but embraces the priorities of places and times such as mission among non-Christians, popular missions in parishes, mass media and retreats, works for the marginalized, youth, family apostolate, etc.

At the initiative of the German Claretians and with the collaboration of the late Bishop of Pala, Rt. Rev Sebastian Vayalil, Claretians started their first house at Kuravilangad in the diocese of Pala, Kerala, in 1970.
