A group of monks of la Trappe, a Cistercian Monastery in Normandy, survived the French Revolution. It was they who gave it its name of Trappists. The Trappists and Trappistines are Cistercian monks and nuns, belonging to the monastic family of St. Benedict of which it is a “reformed” branch
The Order started in 1098 with the founding of Citeaux in France, whose daughter-houses and influence soon extended throughout Europe, thanks to the extraordinary spiritual gifts of St. Bernard (1090-1153).
The Order of Monks and Nuns are now present in the five continents. There are two houses in India: Kurisumala Ashram (monks) in Kerala and the foundation of Ananda Matha Ashram, Makkiyad (nuns) also in Kerala. |
